No reports of stolen horses say police forces across the UK

Police in Kent, Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Staffordshire have told H&H they have received no confirmed reports of horses being stolen in the area.

In the past few days, texts and emails have been circulating regarding a number thefts around the UK — and internet forums, including Horse & Hound's are a-buzz with talk.

But during the course of enquiries today, H&H can confirm that police say no horses have been reported stolen recently.

This includes: three from Lower Rainham, Kent, a Shetland from West Houghton, a cob from Bury, a cob from Abram, five cobs from Cannock, a whole yard of horses in St Helen's, nine horses from Cannock and five from Lichfield.

We are currently investigating further reports received today of 14 horses missing in Nottinghamshire, one in Wigan, and several near the M50 in South Gloucestershire.

But, we are receiving police confirmed reports of sightings of the suspicious men — this morning in Midhurst and Fontwell in West Sussex.

Police are advising people not to worry unduly, but to remain vigilant. They are telling H&H that patrols in rural areas — and where men have been seen photographing horses — have been stepped up.

A spokesman from Kent Police said: "We do have a number of intelligence reports about suspicious vehicles, and we are looking into it, but no horses have been taken that we are aware of.

"But that doesn't mean horses haven't been stolen — it's just that it hasn't been reported."

She said the information was obviously being circulated in good faith, and that people need to remain vigilant.

A spokesman from Greater Manchester Police told H&H that West Houghton police station had been visited by a number of concerned horse owners, worried about a large-scale theft operation.

"They're staying up all night to look after their horses," she said, "but these appear to be rumours which are getting people more and more concerned.

"As far as we're aware, nothing has been stolen and there are no concrete details on what is supposed to have been taken and when — the theft information is all quite general."

She added: "There's nothing much we can tell people other to remain vigilant and to reassure them that we are upping patrols."

There have been unconfirmed suggestions that this activity is in some way linked to Appleby Horse Fair, which starts on Monday.

We have had a report that someone is going round taking pictures of horses, selling them by the photo, then going back and stealing them.

Apparently, they are operating from a white van - reg.no. N253 XAJ and a red Landcruiser (don't have a reg.no. for that one).

Please be vigilant and if you see anyone taking pictures of horses, or the vehicles, we recommend that you contact the police !

Or ring or txt my mob its on 24/7, just hope i get there first !

It was a night not to be missed....

Justine naming her plastic black and red mounting block ...'pony'

Zoe with her one legged 'I can do tricks' stance!

Debbie ducking and diving low flying snake cutter balls and wishing she had a labrador to fetch!

Steve swinging on the gate, like a kid in the candy store getting to grips with the complex jargon of polo 'ball' and 'stick' no not 'BAT' Steve!

For one night the jump field was transformed into a polo pitch - a la Cartier Style, so where was Jude Law and the bloody Dom Perignon?

It was an action packed night.... lots to learn with forehand and backhand shots, how to mount your plastic pony, stick grips, shoulder rotations, re-learning to canter - polo style - to the count of 2 not 3 (the cause of much squeeling) and of course how to blame those all too often 'air shots' on... well; wind turbulance, earth tremours, wrong coloured polo stick, glare off the pions, training on an empty stomach and of course those notorious moving sods of earth!

And the conclusion of all that brain work...'its all in the wrist action' but then Wayne's been saying that for months!

Look out for lesson number 2 as the pace heats up and Steve's property Insurance with it!

Corrupt sense of Justice!

In early January 2008 the RSPCA, assisted by other equine welfare organisations, removed over 100 horses, ponies and donkeys from Spindles Farm, Amersham and charges of animal cruelty were brought against the Gray family. Most of the animals required extensive veterinary treatment and nursing care to start them on the road to good health and some will need continued care for many months to come.

The farm's owner, James Gray, made a formal application to Oxford Magistrates Court on Friday, 4th April 2008 to have the animals returned. The Deputy District Judge ruled to return 29 of these animals into the care of the family, deemed to be family pets, and to send another 82 to public auction. This decision has been greeted with outrage and dismay by the welfare agencies caring for the animals as the case against the Gray family for offences under section 4 and section 9 of the Animal Welfare Act (2006) is yet to be heard.

It is not in the best interests of the animals for these rulings to take place and the RSPCA will investigate all other avenues of appeal. Members of the public are invited to sign this petition to show their support for the RSPCA and the other equine welfare organisations currently caring for these animals in order to secure their future welfare.

The petition referred to above is closed. However we shall find out if alternative means to voice our horror are available and will keep you posted.

Strangles !

It has been confirmed at Wellington and now another local yard. Attached is a URL to a useful info sheet about it all, but basically people need to be vigilant.

It can be passed from horse to horse, via water, clothing or equipment and can survive in the general environment for weeks/months. Horses can be carriers but showing no signs. So people going to shows need to make sure they don't let their horses nose to nose with other horses and keep their contact with other horses to a minimum. People that have had direct contact with it i.e. anyone working at Wellington, need to make sure that don’t come down in same clothes??

Also early detection is vital, if anyone notices that their horse has running nose, high temperature or is generally under the weather they need to take action. Isolation is the only effective way to stop the spread.

We have just found out that Wellington Riding Club has Strangles. They are advising that no horse or human should visit and any horse/ human who has been there recently should not come into contact with others horses.

I presume this is NOT a hoax, but as I am 4000 miles away, maybe you guys have more up to date info. Best to check before going over there!

This is the story of Mary (Debbie) and Gwendaline(Alison) - and "The Night of the Great Fire"...

It was a cold Saturday evening with a strong northerly wind
Ma and Pa had told the girls to "keep an eye on the sky to look out for dark clouds and be sure to take shelter should the blizzard start"

Mary and Gwendaline were sisters and tonight they were so excited as they had planned an adventure together: they were heading down to the bottom field where they would set up the new fencing for their beloved ponies: Sukie and Blade. Tomorrow the ponies were going to move into a new paddock with views over the gallops

"What fun! " the girls said as they skipped down the path hand in hand

"Make sure you have your waterproof coat and gloves on Mary" called Uncle Ray who was sure it wouldn't rain or thunder tonight "but you can't be too careful" he said

"Have you remembered the Kendal Mint Cake for our picnic, Gwen?" Asked Mary

"What fun we are going to have" giggled Gwen as she pulled her blue beanie down tight over her ears just as elder sister Josie had shown her

Once at the paddock the girls set down their tools in the grass and neatly arranged them. They laid everything before them just as Cousin Michael had told them to do. There was string to secure the posts, a stone for cutting the string- which Aunty Mel had provided - Green posts - more than the girls had ever seen before, and of course the large coil of fencing tape that little friend Wayne had laid out for them earlier that day

Eagerly the girls set to work. Gwen held the posts and walked at the side of Mary who took one post at a time and pushed them with all her might firmly into the grass. With each post in the ground the girls giggled and counted out loudly "one", "two" "three" ....

It wasn't long before the girls had put 12 posts in the ground - they were feeling jolly pleased with themselves too

"My! Exclaimed Gwen "haven't we done well - everyone will be so pleased with our work"

"Look at the sky Mary" said Gwen it looks awfully black over there do you think the storm is going to start?"

"Oh My! Yes I think you are right, let's take shelter below the big Oak tree"

Hurridly both girls ran towards the tree to take shelter against it's strong brown trunk.
As they scurried over Mary called out to Gwen "ooch the hail stones are hitting my face - it hurts"

Once under the shelter of the tree Mary said "Gwen, what do we do now?"

"I know we can have our picnic" said Gwen

"Oh super, im terribly hungry, and I think we might be here for some time"

The girls sat down under the canopy of the tree's tentacle like branches and watched the hail stones bouncing up into the air where they landed and hit the ground

"Oh look Mary" The hail istones are the size of Ma's Peas straight out of the pod - do you see?"

"My mint cake is all wet and soggy how is yours?" asked Mary

"Wet! What fun!"

After a few minutes of quietly munching and chewing and their energy restored, Mary suddenly noticed something odd - "Gwen" she said, "do you smell that yukky smell in the air?"

"Yes I do smell it Mary - what ever can it be?"

"Look over there! Behind you Gwen, do you see all the grey smoke billowing from Farmer Giles's lovely old cottage!"

"Oh my! It's on fire!" exclaimed Gwen

Remembering their brownie training with Brown Owl Olanda Otis - the girls quickly scrambled to their feet. "quick, let's run for help" And with that they darted out from the shelter of the tree, and made fast their escape across the field towards Farmer Giles' cottage

Quickly their little feet, wet and slippy in the sleet and mud, ran, "faster faster" shouted Gwen her voice hard to hear above the roar of the wind and hail

" I'm going as fast as I can Gwen, Oh, do wait, I still have my bad leg and knee and running hurts so awfully"

Soon the girls were upon the farmer's cottage. Breathless and anxious they glanced around the cottage gardens searching for signs of Farmer Giles or his pretty wife Clarissa and son Philip, or Teddy the cat!

"You hoo! they called in unison" "Is anyone at home?" The girls huddled tightly onto each other as they called out

"Let's not get separated" Gwen said, "there may be an explosion"

Within moments, help was at hand. For others too had noticed the billowing smoke and, being grown ups with telephones - they had called the fire brigade. Oh the girls were so relieved to hear the noisey blast of the sirens, and through the sleet and hail to see the swirling blue lights of help at hand

"oh Hurrah! Hurrah!" they danced and cried aloud

"Look, Gwen it's Uncle Graham, he will save the day"

And, true enough within one minute or perhaps two, Uncle Graham's brightly painted red fire engine was busy at work, squashing the flames with his large hose and water pipe

For a moment the girls thought Uncle Graham looked nervous "did you see his hands shaking?" asked Mary

"Yes" said Gwen "Ma says they often do that, something to do with Aunty Janet not playing ball with him enough. Ma's face always turns pink when she talks of Uncle Raymond's shaking hands so I don't ask any questions"

Both girls soon forgot about their Uncle's hands and looked on in satisfaction at his strong large hose bending and twisting with a life of its own

"Yeah! Yeah! Hurray for Uncle Graham" they sang bouncing and skipping as they jiggled about

And soon the excitement was all over. Farmer Giles and his lovely wife Clarissa and son Philip, and Carol the cat were safe and well. They had been building a bonfire around the back fo the barn! And so the story comes to an end....The pretty little cottage with the orange upstairs light was safe. The fire was safely out and the smoke had stopped as quickly as it had began

Farmer Giles was terribly grateful to the girls for all their help. "Come on inside my dears" He said, the present Mrs Giles will fetch you both a nice glass of hot milk and a plate of Battenburg to thank you both for all your help"

"Oh wait till we tell Ma and Pa and Uncle Ray, elder sister Josie, Brown Owl Olanda Otis, Cousin Mel and Uncle Michael and little friend Wayne " smiled Mary

"Won't they all be disappointed to have missed out on such an adventure" Gwen beamed

"Now you two girls" whispered Uncle Graham, "Let's be havin both of you into this here fire engine we best be getting you both home to your family - it will be quicker this way and your AuntyJanet will be sure to get you cleaned up and spanking new before your Ma and Pa cast eyes on you both"

"Oh my, we must look a frightful sight" giggled Mary as she and Gwen skipped towards the fire engine hand in hand still clutching their Kendle Mint Cake and soggy gloves and hats

"what a smashing adventure" whispered Gwen "let's finish the fencing in the morning, who knows we may have another adventure tomorrow!"

After Monday's GREAT WINDS... we had a yard injury ... luckily only a car!

Debbie's car sat for two days underneath the weight of a 20 foot fir tree until the tree surgeons could come out, chain sawed the offending tree into tiny pieces, and free the car from his pine shackles.

The Insurance Engineer came out to inspect the damage - but to everyone's amazement could only find one small dint on the roof. Somehow the car withstood the weight - surely a good advert for German engineering if ever it was needed. (don't think my discovery would have failed but to crumple under the tree)!

Tack Room New Lock

Dear All,

The mortice lock that Steve fitted last summer on the tack room door is now ready to be used. A master key has been added to the blue disk key ring used for opening the barn.

If anyone wants to have their own key cut Timpsons' can't cut them but there is a cobblers and key cutters on Duke Street, Wokingham that can - cost £3.95

If we start using this lock immediately we should be insured (assuming individuals have a policy).

I would like to book the school for Sunday 9th Of March
I've been asked if a little girl can ride a horse around the school.
She's obsessed with horses & loves everything to-do with them.
Sounds like every girl i've ever known!

She's about to have heart surgery & the parents want to give her
something to take her mind off it, if only for a short time.

My plan would be to use the school from 1pm for about 30 minutes ?

Mucky Mouths Make Light Work

They say that mimikry is the finest form of flattery so Zoe should be thrilled. After executing her faultless teeth first face-plough into the school surface, Sandra - not to be beaten - staged a legs akimbo head first forward summersault off Cobbles - causing Alison to go into cardiac arrest, the security guard to soil his trousers, and Steve to re-tarmac Ron's drive.

Fortunately only the left boobie was worse for the wear and Alison won a lifetime achievement award for her greeen faced appearance before vomitting from fright.

Meanwhile, also searching for the spot light - Michael and Melissa were chewing out the head of the hunt offering carefully chosen words of advise - bound to help their riding not to mention local Longreach Hunt relations!

Never one to miss an opportunity....Steve (known to a small select group as 'walking Septicaemia') rallied fast, arranged for the Alsation to be shot, Ron's crops re-planted, cobbles divets filled back in and the Bramshill Road Bank populated with wild poppy seeds, all to keep the neighbours happy!

While mayhem truely ensued, Ray and Carol stood snug as bugs inside the barn, oblivious to the outside trauma. Ray announced he wished he'd been 'gifted with another 6 inches' and then suggested sunday morning confessionals with a red light to illustrate who was 'on' and who was 'off'!

Steve, suffering from the delights of post opperative high jinks threw debbie over his shoulder, her right foot knocking the front molar out of Essy's head as her legs flew up above Steve's shoulder, promptly chucking up as soon as her head was once again back above her feet. Steve, so intent on explaining to her and carol the exact name of that specific disarming black belt martial arts move, that rendered debbie sick with pain, failed to notice, the stars around her head, or the horses bleeding nose!

Not the most quiet 48 hours seen on the yard, but hey, no point being depressed - eyes forward to the summer crop of poppies and all that that can bring with a little plastic, rubber, and fluid in the right proportions!

Ok i'm number three to hit the deck !

It seems we have a sway of '40' years of age birthday celebrations coming up this year at Longreach. The first is Wayne. I know many of you will be shocked to think of Wayne as a day older than 28 unless that is you consider his general demeanour on the yard, and then, let's face it we are all at pain to remember that actually he is neither a todler (who has just learnt the word 'poo' and 'bottom'), nor is he a pubescent teenager! Shocking, I know!

Anyway, enough of such snyde underhanded commentry - picked up from Michael - the point is we need ideas for a yard gathering and celebration. All ideas to Debbie please and then we will post a vote on the blog once ideas have been gathered.

A petition has been put on http://www.voicesforhorses calling for equine traders and dealers to be regulated and licenced in the light of the 30 or so dead horses found in Amersham, Buckinghamshire.

Paintball in the summer ?

After speaking to 'Hard As Nails' Debbie, who just wants a gun in her hand ?
She would like to play Paintball, i did think about Girls taking on
the Boy's but whats the fun in that ?

So my next plan would be we stay as one & play another yard ?

Now that would be a much better idea, I'd rather not shoot any of you.

New Year High Jinks...

High Jinks comes with Happy New Year fun and frolics - and a price to pay!

Every year New Year arrives fast on the heels of Christmas. A 3 - 4 day period of 'relative visitations' 'best v neck sweaters' (for the boys) and 'girl clothes' and clean hands for us women was obviously quite enough for the citizens of Longreach.

And despite 'new man' Ray only being 4 days old his initiation into Life in the Inside Track let rip.

It all began with Carol publicly bragging about her latest and very sparkly new prize trophy (gratis of Santa) ... new underpants! So now every morning, she has a choice to wear - we can only imagine how excited Paul must be feeling - but Carol assures us that's all he's been feeling!

Naturally Wayne fell deep into the lure of 'almost fresh' panties below those sexy navy baggy jods! - 'Ladies draws and muffs' - how much more teasing could a man stand after 4 days of Chrismas cheer and good behaviour?

It seems not much! In the last 24 hours the Jones household has been testing the limits on 'home entertainment'...a rebellion against Christmas and who can blame them having spent Boxing Day in hospital worried to bits about Janet's son. (Get better soon)!

This rebellion it seems has left its mark as Wayne announced today that he's not swinging with a full bat! (He only has one testical). Oh! God! But that's not all - Janet's walking about as though she's got carpet burn in the unmentionables - together with head to foot bruises down her left side - what have they been up to?

If the scene this morning in the Picnic area was anything to go by then next year 'no more party games at Christmas for Wayne!'.... For it was his idea to play a festive game of morning 'hide and seek' using Carol's full and steeming wheelbarrow as the object to hide. In true New Year spirit the girls (Janet, Carol, Debbie) gave chase....when all of a sudden too much 'twister' over Christmas and Wayne (aka Jonesie Hollyfield) struck back! .... Poor defenceless Debbie was taken down and laid out flat - amongst the mud and grass: ring-side manners were greatly lacking - debbie's snaping jaws and grinding teeth could be heard in the mares field but 'Tyson esque' in size as he is - Wayne left the scene (Debbie's ears in tact) - quickly putting his trouser belt back on, and witnesses swore that his limp was back! Could it be his knee? Or, is the seat of the problem further north?

We can live in hope!

All I Want for Christmas .....

Funny how the simple things in life can take on a whole new meaning at Christmas - Christmas - a time when you're so busy it seems like a luxury to visit a real loo (easier to drop, bend and squat in the nearest stable) never mind find the time to actually take your trousers down!

Yet, in contrast Christmas is always full of those incredibly well organised people. You know the ones - those who (like our very own Lou) seem to find the time to give birth to beautiful baby girls, remain sweat and smiling, and still be ready for Christmas! Or there's our new boy Ray with time to plan his livery relocation for 3 days after the big day itself. No such luxuries for the rest of us....mornings spent knee deep in horse poo in the muck heep - our only thought a pathetic prayer to the Almighty... "please god when I do eventually get to Waitrose at 6pm on Christmas Eve ...please God LET THEIR BE FOOD LEFT on the shelves."

It's true, we girls do have a tough time of it emotionally - especially at festive times like this...

One minute we are horse-whisperer; kind and patient with our loving steeds. Next, we are shovelling shit like there's no tomorrow - already late for work. Amongst the work to deliver, the people to please, there's the shopping to do, the cooking to plan, house cleaning, ironing, sewing, present planning, ponsetta watering, tree decorating, card writing (and posting), invitation rsvp managing, partner cajoling, parent visit rota negotiations and KIDS! If we're really lucky we get to ride our horses and land somewhere soft as we nose dive to the floor in the unplanned dismount that follows our lapse of concentration as we plan the trolley dash up aisle and down again.

But this is not what causes us to falter! We're made of sterner stuff. A few extra things to be done wont break the true grit spirit you see smeered across our red cracked cheecks. No, what brings every lace -fearing horse woman to a petrified halt is ....the PARTY night! The NIGHT OUT! Any occasion that requires us to transform into ...yes you guessed ...a WOMAN!

These are the occassions we fear; not rearing stallions, stables brimming with poo or electric fence jolts on a dark winters night. It is the shocking sight of 'shiney women' brimming with white smiles, spotless hair, and antipersprant filled arm pits and crotch. The types who have spent hours intimately smoothing out every square inch of their squeaky clean skin - inches that most horsewoman haven't seen never mind groomed for months! No farrier rasp in use on their hard- skin heels - these are feet lovingly soaked, stroked, massaged and nail painted by some exotic sounding Thai Therapist offering soothing vestiges of hot ginger tea while listening to whale song and budha bells.

In a week when 'Olympia and Ankye are the words on our lips, this 'other woman' has fixed....

...her hair (and booked an appointment),
...her nail colour (hands and feet),
...her outfit (washed and ironed), with matching handbag
...her colour-coded eye shadow,
...has drawn cash out from the bank (no ATM in Sainsburys for her),
...visited L'Oreal for a root touch up home treatment
...squeezed in a low cal, low soda healthy lunch with the girls,
...sown sequences onto last years pashmina,
...and found the time to break in her new 5" heels

Ah yes but do her bra and panties match you cry? Of course! No pop socks on this baby! These are the woman who have perfected the Visible Panty Line and made it into an art form - with every embossed lacy curve and G String-Frill - emblazened with its personalised 'invitation mark' and guarantee of better things to come!

Sitting opposite these beasts to behold silences the inner horsewoman as we inch by inch take stock of our own finely turned out bodies....

...Our nails - short, broken, and still brimming with this mornings horse poo!
...Our hair - clean-ish, and fragranced like a water mark with that seldom smelt perfume 'Urine of equus'
... Our handbag - hasn't been seen since last Christmas - somewhere at the back of the wardrobe so we resort to stuffing a solitary lip stick into our partners pocket praying we won't actually need to get it out- in case we turn him on in the process!
... Our legs - chapped and red having shaved without cream!
....Armpits - soggy - no time to towel dry!
... Crotch - Itchy - too much eau to toilet (without the practice run)
... Underwear - ah! Our only prestine white pair turned murkey grey from jodphur dye running during a downpour at the weekend
... Our dainty hands- calloused and chapped
....Sexy lingery - no! Good old M & S pop socks (but we'd prefer our welly socks)

What do I want for Christmas? For the red rosette - the coveted prize, the top pot, to go to the man beside me as reward for loosing his sense of smell, his eyesight and sense of touch. Now all I need is for Santa to bring me that 5' 5" brown paper back with holes cut out to eat through and hell never know I windsucked through the entree!

Bogus Farriers !

Two males believed to be "travelers" are going uninvited into livery yards and stables all over Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Northants, in a silver grey van offering to shoe people's horses at two thirds of the usual price. They claim that they are working for a local farrier who is off sick (not true). A few days after these visits some of the yards were burgled. The van they used was fully kitted out with all the equipment necessary to shoe a horse and it matches a description of a van stolen in a burglary at a (genuine) farrier's home address in Watford earlier this year.

Strictly Style Wars!

At this time of year you would be forgiven for expecting to find wooly horses, puffa-clad riders and look a like 'chewbacker' suits everywhere!

Instead, Longreach has taken on quite the fashion scene. The horses have their own "style wars" in operation with chaser clips, hunter clips and talk of winter blanket clips spreading from stable to stable.

Michael is in daily awe of Debbie's matching outfits!

Carol's winter warmers include her peaked top pochahontis hat with oversized fleece (as seen being worn by the Michelin Man - Oh! And Wayne (as he tries to crawl up inside))! Some have dared to suggest (but aren't alive to confess) that she's a big ol' "weeble" wobling around inside her Jelly Belly snuggle suit built for 6!

Melissa is in for a treat! Michael was over-heard confessing that he struggles to get his undies to match! What worries us is - what is he trying to get them to match with? (He does shave his legs so maybe there's a clue in there).

As the light closes in, Steve takes comfort in the safety of his waterproof long-johns (seems no spills show no matter how bad the leak).

Can't wait till the ice storms hit and they all have an excuse to bring out the sheer tights, sparkley ice dresses and santa hats! And that's just the horses!
